Sooooo... Calley and I went out to the "fancy" cafe in our neighborhood the other day to grab a bite. We were reminded of a strange phenomenon that occurs in many foreign countries. Attempted imitation of Western style food, geared towards ex-pats, often fails... miserably. The restaurant we went to looks fantastic and is very clean. The service is fantastic too but some of the dishes aren't so stellar. Calley's goat cheese, marinated mushroom and corn salad on a bed of greens was actually canned corn and canned mushrooms with a few slivers of green peppers sitting in the juice from the canned corn. What an exquisite marinade! There wasn't really any goat cheese to speak of either, just a smear of local sour white cheese on stale toasts. My Mediterranean mozzarella panini was conspicuously missing the mozzarella as well. At least our coffee drinks were delicious. Another strange thing about this place is that it is only decorated with posters advertising the restaurant itself. On our way out of the restaurant we noticed a framed poster with one of the restaurant's mottos written in big letters...
"You won't need to sit on two chairs. You won't be able to eat that much, even if you wanted to."
We weren't sure if they were commenting on the quality of their food or on the size of their chairs. Needless to say we left the establishment completely unsatisfied and thoroughly confused.
Happy Mothers Day!
